Student Nurse Support - Shift Happens with Sian

#HelloMyNameIs Sian đź‘‹

I’m the founder of Shift Happens – with Sian the platform for Student Nurse support.

My journey into nursing wasn’t easy or straightforward. Like many of you, I’ve faced burnout, self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and the constant pressure to prove myself. All while juggling real life. I know, more than anyone, the challenges that come with being a student nurse. The long placements, the academic stress, the emotional toll, and that overwhelming feeling of “am I even cut out for this?”

Over the past decade, I’ve gone from Healthcare Assistant to Nurse Associate, Registered Nurse, Specialist, and Educator. Along the way, I’ve made mistakes, learned tough lessons, and discovered what really works when it comes to surviving — and thriving — in nursing.

About Me

My journey in healthcare began in 2014 when I started working as a healthcare assistant on an acute medical ward. It was there that I discovered the true meaning of compassionate, patient-centred care.

In 2017, I joined one of the country’s first Nurse Associate pilot programmes. Halfway through, I welcomed my daughter into the world and still proudly qualified in 2020. Yes, right in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic!

I “stepped on” to the Registered Nurse degree programme in 2022 and graduated in 2024. Over the past ten years, I’ve developed my skills across a wide range of settings. Including, acute medicine, emergency and elective surgery, trauma, paediatrics, sexual health, community nursing, outpatients, and A&E. Every placement, every shift has helped shape me into a confident, adaptable nurse ready to face whatever the day brings.

In 2023, I was honoured to be named a finalist in the Nursing Times “Ann Shuttleworth Rising Star” Award. I was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year, and recognised as my university’s Community Hero. For me, the biggest wins have been the ones that impact others. Such as successfully leading two policy changes to formally recognise the Nurse Associate role, and advocating for student nurses and inclusive practice across the NHS.

I’ve shared my experiences at university open days, London conferences, and pilot programme panels. I’m extremely passionate about using my voice to help shape a more supportive, equitable nursing profession.

My Mission

My mission is to empower student nurses with the tools, knowledge and support to build confidence, resilience and self belief. I will create a safe, supportive space where every student nurse feels valued, encouraged and never alone on this journey.
